Diwali dates back to ancient times in India, as a festival after the
winter harvest in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik. The festival is mentioned
in Sanskrit scriptures such as the Padma Purana, the Skanda Purana etc. The
Diyas (lamps) are mentioned in Skanda Purana to symbolically represent the Sun,
the cosmic giver of light and energy to all life. Hindus in some regions of
India associate Diwali with the legend of Yama and Nachiketa on Kartik Amavasya
(Diwali night). The Nachiketa story
about right versus wrong, transient wealth versus true wealth, ignorance versus
knowledge is recorded in Katha Upanishad.
The Yoga, Vedanta, and Samkhya schools of Hindu philosophy share the
belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure,
infinite, and eternal, it is called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the
"victory of good over evil" refers to the light of higher knowledge
dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as
the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality.
Diwali is the celebration of this inner spiritual light over darkness,
knowledge over ignorance, right over wrong, good over evil. On this this day
Lord Ganesh and Devi Mahalakshmi are worshipped together.
Lord Ganesh is the bestower of success, intelligence, education,
knowledge, wisdom, talent as well as wealth & prosperity. He is
Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles and hurdles. He is the Pratham Pujya and
is always worshipped first. Lord Ganesh is worshipped for Riddhi (Wealth),
Siddhi (Success) & Buddhi (Intelligence).
Devi Mahalakshmi is the bestower of wealth. Praying to Devi Mahalakshmi
is one of the best ways to please her. Anyone who worships her with full
devotion is blessed with wealth and material comforts.
To get the benefit of both the Dieties, they are usually worshipped
together before starting any important work like a new business, house
construction or any other undertaking, or on festivals related to Lord Ganesh
or Devi Lakshmi. This Puja is considered to be very effective in toning down
miseries related to hurdles & obstacles and financial scarcity.
