VAT SAVITRI VRAT KATHA & PUJA
This is a very special Vrat which is done primarily by married women all across India for the longevity of their husband’s life and for peace and harmony in the family life. This Vrat can be performed by an unmarried woman to find a good life partner and for a good married life. This Vrat is performed on the Amavasya (new moon) of Jyeshtha month in North and the Eastern parts of India and on Purnima (full moon) in the Western and Southern parts of India.
As per Skand Puran and the Mahabharat, Savitri's husband was said to have a short life span consequently on the day of his death, Lord Yama came to take away his life. Here at this point of time Savitri by her immense courage, presence of mind and persistence forced Lord Yama to return the life of Satyavan, therefore this Vrat is dedicated to Devi Savitri for providing a long life to Satyavan.
In this Vrat, a thread (red/yellow) is tied around a banyan tree by the women. It the Shastras it is said that the banyan tree symbolizes the Trimurti viz, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Lord Brahma lives in the roots, Lord Vishnu in its trunk and Lord Shiva in the foliage. Therefore, it said worshipping the banyan tree on this auspicious day confers the blessings of the Trimurti on the woman performing it granting long life and prosperous life to her husband. The Vat tree also symbolizes longevity and strength.
Puja Description: Swasti Vaachan, Shanti Path, Sankalp, Gauri-Ganesh Pujan, Kalash Pujan, Lakshmi-Narayan Pujan, Vat Savitri Katha, Aarti, Pushpanjali and Prasad to Brahmins.
